I'm not sure what measures Microsoft currently takes against users who try to update their pirated software. However, if you want to get rid of the message that keeps popping up (and possibly receive access to windows updates!), check out the link below where users experiencing the same issue have discovered a solution.

Best of luck!

Many countries (inluding the Phillipines) sell computers with pirated versions of windows; they will also sell the (pirated) install CD for a few $ instead of the usual $200.

The serial numbers they use to install the OS are well-known bad numbers, but they really don't care, nor do most of the people who use it. If you want to get 'legit' you can pay up the cash to get a good number, or you can just run without the updates, patches, or support.

If the 'genuine advantage' hasn't yet locked up/frozen your computer yet, it probably won't any time soon - but I won't be surprised if MS does that eventually.

Basically whoever sold you the laptop had a hacked version of Windows Xp. When you did your automatic updates from microsoft they probably validated weather the account was legit. You should probably purchase a copy but if I where you I would go to the store and buy it so you have a physical recipt and proof of purchase. I think XP home is only a hundred bucks now.
