I bought Vista Ultimate (32 bit) from a mail order company and installed it over my XP version. Everyhting seemed ok and I was receiving updates but then I came to log on and I got a windows need to be activated screen, I put my product key in again but it said it was not valid. I tried to boot from the Vista disk and all I get is a blue background with a mouse pointe, why???? Can anyone help? If I have been the victim of piracy is it possible to get back to my old version of XP or at least log on and rescue my files and go on the net to try and sort this out? PLEASE HELP!!!

I know I could activate windows by paying for a valid product ID but I think that is unfair seeing as though I have already paid £100 for the software, I tried ringing up the company but guess what they have vanished into thin air!!

You need to contact the police to try and file fraud charges. If you charged it you may be able to get some help from your credit card company. However, it's not Microsoft's fault that you bought stolen property so they probably won't give you any help. There's not much else you can do but to purchase a legal copy and be more careful in the future.

If you REALLY want your files, you can download a LiveCD of Linux.
http://damnsmalllinux.org, I recommend.
Mount your HDD and.. well.. I'm not here to explain things.

Get your money back, dude, if you can't I'd sue them.
