This is what I'd really like to do. Go into the Coast Guard for 2 years active duty. After active duty with the coast guard, instead of being on inactive duty for 6 years, I want to transfer straight to the Air force and serve 2 or maybe 4 years active duty, then proceed with the 4 years inactive with the air force. Has anyone heard of people doing this? Is it possible (allowable)? Are there any rules forbidding me from doing this?

I understand that I may have to do basic training twice. Will I get a dishonerable discharge from the Coast Guard if I try to transfer to the Air Force right after active duty with the Coast Guard? Will I owe them any money?

My main question is still....is this route possible for me to take or is it against military law?

To admiril, the 4th answer down,

that's just it. Even though i never took the asvab, I know that if i take it now, I most likely will not score near where I want to. So i'm in the process of deciding to go into the CG because it's a relatively safe branch, even with an average asvab score (so i hear). By the time i'm finished with active duty in the CG, i believe i'll then had time to score better on the asvab.

P.S. I think i read somewhere that they don't allow you to enter basic training after the age of 27, is this true? If so, then how does someone over 27 enlist into the AF?

Well besides the fact that the minimum Coast Guard enlistment is for 4 years of active duty and the minimum Air Force enlistment is for 4 years active duty.

So, NO you cannot do what you want to.

But you can join the Coast guard for 4 years, leave active duty, then try and enlist in the USAF, serve 4 years on active duty in the USAF and then go to inactive duty in the USAF reserves.

It would be better to join the USAF first, then after your ETS, enlist in the Coast Guard.

The only prior service the USAF is taking now, are pararescue, combat controllers and Linguist..

Only the Army has a 2 year enlistment option at this time.

The Marines are the only service that require prior service to thru boot/basic again. The other services have transition programs.

you can sure try. but the air force is in the middle of a massive draw-down right now, and you are more than likely to end up with a terrible, menial job. why not just stay coast guard or go air force in the first place?
if you're reasonably smart, and can put up good asvab scores, the air force is a great place.

While on inactive reserve you can re-enlist in any branch that will have you. I say it that way because the last I heard the Air Force didn't take prior service. That may have changed now.

Yes, I served in one of the mentioned branches. In Boot Camp, I remember hearing of several guys who served in more than one service. I tried to re-up in the AF reserves, but waited too long to do it. You won't be held liable for breaking any enlistment contracts, don't worry. You won't be penalized with a dishonorable discharge. Just do your time, get out, and re-up in the other service. By the way, the food is awesome in both services. Enjoy yourself and see the world.

Transfer from Coast Guard to the Air Force is not prohibited as long as the applicant is qualified.

I'm not sure... I think you would have to sign up for the USAF but would probably lose your accrued rank and time in... check it out with a recruiter.
