As winter sets in and the air gets chilly, there is a fair chance that we all will catch a cold in the next few months.

But how do you beat the common cold or the flu without going to the doctors or reaching for the nearest bottle of pills?

That's just what Chris Jensen decided to find out.

Recently Chris spoke with herbalist Kerry Bone about natural preventatives and cures for the common cold and the flu.

Kerry spoke about a remedy used by the KIKAPOO Indians called Kikapoo Joy Juice and it didn't take long before listener Melda rang through with the recipe, and here it is:

1 or 2 cloves of garlic (crushed),
The juice and zest of 1 lemon,
1/2 teaspoon of ginger (GRATED FRESH is best),
pinch Cayenne or chilli powder (to taste)
or better still fresh finely chopped chilli,
1 tablespoon honey.

Mix all ingredients with a cup of water just off the boil, sip slowly and go to bed.

So if you do feel a sniffle and a sore throat coming on, why not try this ancient American Indian remedy for a change - and remember, get lots of sleep and take it easy this winter!

Hi! Still today in 2007 there is still no cure for the common cold. Doctors still say takeTylenol and get lots of bed rest. Now they they also say chicken soup with onion, garlic, peppers, tomatoes etc. for the
vitamins and fumes from the onion and garlic to help perspire and for the sinuses. I am a singer and have found from other singers some ways that also help. I take Air-borne for prevention
and ZeBEC. Zinc and Vitamin C has been shown to prevent colds and to quicken the time that we are sick when we do get one. Zicam helps to shorten a cold's time too. Since colds are a virus, we have to catch it from someone else. Watch who you touch, and wash your hands alot. Good luck!

People are most likely to have colds during fall and winter, starting in late August or early September until March or April. The increased incidence of colds during the cold season may be attributed to the fact that more people are indoors and close to each other. In addition, many cold viruses thrive in low humidity, making the nasal passages drier and more vulnerable to infection.

Colds are caused by viruses, which are notoriously difficult to treat. also Antibiotics are not efective against cold. Despite massive efforts to find a cure, the best treatment is to avoid infection in the first place. secondly wash your hands frequently and avoid close contact with people who have colds. When around people with colds, do not touch your nose or eyes, because your hands may be contaminated with the virus

However, the following are some treatments that may help to relieve some symptoms of the cold:

* over-the-counter cold medications, such as decongestants and cough medicine
* over-the-counter antihistamines (medication that helps dry up nasal secretions and suppress coughing)
* rest
* increased fluid intake
* pain relievers for headache or fever
* warm, salt water gargling for sore throat
* petroleum jelly for raw, chapped skin around the nose and lips
* warm steam for congestion

Theres a saying that........
"Take medication and common cold is treated in 1 week
and without medication in 7 days"

There is not a cure for the common cold. It is a virus that has to run it's course.

A preexisting immune system that is not depleated due to bad diet, insufficient rest, drugs, (controlable) stress and, as far as possible, toxins in the environment.

Taking a pill, or other post-infection remedies, to cure a cold has never worked and never will. The cold is merely a symptom of an overtaxed immune system.

Eating one big onion raw in the night and drinking only hot water and hot liquids till the cold subsides. For common cold which is chronic in nature, there is no alternative but to eat atleast 400 gms of garlic well cooked with other food every month. Milk should be avoided and only curd should be taken. Curd should be slightly warmed in microwave in wintry conditions.

Zicam -- used it myself and gave it to my kids with great results. It's a homeopathic zinc gel you put in your nostrils. Shortens the duration and reduces the severity of the common cold. You can buy it over the counter at most drugstores. I get mine at Walgreens.
