I recently returned to work after I was violently ill for 3 months. I was tested for colitis, cancer, croan's disease and after finding nothing they diagnosed me with IBS. I have to watch what I eat and drink so my symptoms don't get too severe. I work at a buffet and have suddenly become very scared of germs. I see so many different kinds of people handling the utensils. I feel that I'm so supseptable to illness. I have never taken any sick time for this before. I had a little bit of an IBS episode at work the other day and have come to the conclusion that people are not very sanitary and I might get sick from them. They are coughing and sneezing and blowing their noses or maybe just haven't bathed for a few days. I really like my job but I'm afraid this will interfere with my customer service. Its getting to the point where I won't even touch utensils handled by anyone unless I have gloves on.
Is my fear irrational?

Everybody at my work wears gloves to handle the food. We don't have to wear them to wipe counters. That is when I adjust the utensils to straighten them out or stir the food.

you can develop a fear of anything its just in your mind, unfortunately you can't avoid germs you can just stay clean to decrease them cos they are all over the place so just make sure you wash your hands regularly and keep everthing clean no dirty dishes and stuff....and try to ease up a little

uh yeah u can but its usually after giving birth.
its called obsessive cumpulsive disorder.
they just discovered that it is not a disorder and more of a disease. they made a medical connection that people with ocd have more of some fluid in the brain. what i dont get is how people at your work could be making your bowels irratible? the gloves is a very extreme case, id get help. or find a new job. i have ocd and touch things but just wash up after. if i started to feel i needed to wear gloves id go get medication, there is medications for such behaviours. but u need to understand that touching germs makes you stronger and less supseptable to illness, you build up a tolerance.
get a flu shot, maybe that would take some stress off of u. if you continue on like this your going to end up ruining your life. ive been ocd for about 14 years now and i promise to u it affects every part of my life. and not in a good way. there are some really good web sites for this disorder

You can develop a phobia. Did you ever see Jack Nicholson in "As Good As It Gets"? It was a funny movie but the phobia is real. Might want to talk to someone before it gets out of hand.
