I know some fantastic female cops. Unfortunately, there are some men who give them a hard time. Not many woman want to put themselves in a position like that. Also, many departments have an academy (or state certification course) that lasts 2 or 3 months where you have to stay on campus. That deters a lot of women who have children. Another issue is having children. Can a pregnant female officer effectively patrol? The female officer will have to do light duty during this time -- causing more animosity with her male peers. Then there is the issue of possibly having to subdue significantly larger and stronger male subjects. There are very effective ways of doing this and a lot of training out there, but some women are discouraged by the prospect. There are lots of challenges to being a cop under any circumstances, being a female just adds a few more.

Don't insult me with the strength and communication stuff. I am in fact a female cop and can tell you exactly why.
-Because most families are supported by the female it is hard for a woman to enjoy this life in such a demanding job.
-Most police officers are ex-military which is also dominated by males. Law enforcement departments embrace this type of dicipline that comes with military personnel and recruit directly from the base.
-The career of law enforcement officer leads the world to believe that they have a super human strength. When in actuallity we are plain ol' everyday people with a lot of training.
-Male officers aren't as accepting to females and some of them can't handle the criticizim.
-Most often women are taught to know their place by society standards. Therefore they never try because phycial work is supposed to be for men.
If you've ever seen the movie North Country, that's how I've felt sometimes in my department. I sometimes feel Like I don't belong. Unlike the military, we don't have male and female training. It's all the same for both genders. Either you make it or you don't. So, I deserve to be accepted but who' s listening.
Oh, bye the way, my dept. just started a light duty assignment for pregnant officers 3 years ago. I've been employed for 6 years, God forbid I'd gotten pregnant 4 or 5 years ago.
Good Luck, I hope this was helpful....

I am a female and was in law enforcement for over 20 years, my dad retired after almost being killed after 38 years on the force. So I have a little bit different point of view. There is still a good ole boy mentality in law enforcement. Men don't want women to work with them. It's basically a boys club. But there is a very important change taking place. Women when I first started had to be TOUGH or they went home crying every night, those women didn't last. You finally make your place with the guys and their wives get jealous, you spent more time with their husbands than they did. I didn't blame the wives but it also wasn't our fault. Because we were liked the guys started to confide in us just like they did their male counterparts. I always felt bad if one of the wives didn't like me and I knew that her husband was sleeping with her best friend, or what ever. That is also a reason women don't stay. Most of the people able to hire and fire will hire a man over a woman every time. Because of the quick turnarounds of the female officers and they will use that as an excuse even if he's not worried. If I could sit and talk to you I could give you answers to many of your questions. SO if you want to contact me bw_bp_kw@yahoo.com.
GOOD LUCK.

Female officers still face some barriers, and prejudice in their jobs. The male officers still resent some of the things that come with female officers. My sister is also a police officer and she does a great job, can run marathons and works out with weights. Some guys don't work at all on physical fitness, others do great.
Women bring a lot of the same challenges to law enforcement that men do, but they face less acceptance even to this day.
Sometimes people say they don't want a female officer to answer their call. When I was the watch commander and this happened one time I told them what you see is what you get, we sent a girl cop, deal with it!

Discrimination:
1. Women were not even allowed to be in the military until the mid20th century and that was limited to few jobs... WACs
2. When women were finally able to go into more fields, they were discriminated against in many of the male dominated areas and schools. IE, West Point, etc...
3. Women to this day, are not promoted as high or quick as men. The main reason is due to combat experience being a prerequisite for many upper level positions such as a General.
Crap I just realized you meant police officers. I'm not retyping this. LOL

this is one reason and not meant to dismiss any others but they do not apply as often as men. and anything about the lack of strength or women not being able to handle the physical requirements is a bunch of crap. i know more than a couple of female officers who could whoop my butt, and i am not a small guy, and i have plenty of training to defend myself. females are actually better physically equipped for much of police work. their generally smaller stature gives them a lower centre of gravity, there legs are usually more powerful than a mans giving them the ability to maintain a foot chase for a longer period of time, also since most criminals are men they tend ot either underestimate the female officers or just try and flirt with them.

Officers work odd ball hrs, so there goes a stable family life. It is also a sense of duty among many men to protect their families & their community from bad guys (a natural transition from military to civilian life). Hope I could help. Good luck!

Are there sufficient women people who want to be officers? think of roughly why they would not want to artwork in that ecosystem. refer to a pair women human beings law enforcement officials and a few women people who do no longer want to be law enforcement officials. I think of that the boys in can charge are no longer keen to have too many women folk human beings, they're worried they're going to take over. you're maximum appropriate to declare men have greater actual potential. shop them for the muscle artwork and enable the ladies human beings get on with something.

Look into the demographics of risk. Most women tend to avoid jobs that are risky. Check out the OSHA statistics on the %-age of the jobs listed as "hazardous" filled by women, and the %-age of on-the-job-deaths that occur to women. As a group, women tend very strongly to avoid hazardous jobs.
