I want to put new flooring in my kitchen and livingroom. Currently there is hardwood. I have a large dog and find that his nails scratch and put grooves in the foor (even though I trim them regularly). What type of flooring is good to use, that will stand the wear and tear. Thanks.

Laminate flooring could be the best for you. You could also put in tile. I have an 85 pound boxer, and just put in a laminate floor, and it is great. If you live near the water, you should go with a tile or stone product instead. Laminate floors delaminate with too much moisture in the air, or with "standing" water. People say not to use laminate if you have a chance of spilling liquids on it. That is not an issue if you wipe it up in a timely manner. The problem is with "standing" water.
There are many different styles out now as well. I have a laminate that looks like slate tiles.

We have three dogs and two cats. We put engineered floor in the laundry and Hickory hardwood floor through out the rest of the house. It has an aluminum oxide finish on it. This finish is very hard and is used on a lot of the engineered hardwood floors. It is holding up very well.
