I'm heading to Thailand [Bangkok & Phuket] this week for a week on a business sponsored holiday.

I've read a lot on what women shouldn't wear in Thailand so as not to offend the Thais - ie. no shorts, tank tops or short skirts - but I'd like confirmation from people who have been there recently. Our accomodation is in luxury hotels, and I'd imagine there that these types of clothing are acceptable, but when we go out from the confines of the hotel what sort of clothes should I be wearing?

Thanks!

When you are at the pool or beach, you can wear whatever, no topless. On the streets day or night, short shorts are out, if you are planning on visiting a temple it is advisable to wear something long. I would suggest you buy a Sarong (or take one with you) carry it in your purse, along with a bottle of water and you are ready anytime anyplace. When visiting a temple, you may be asked to take off your shoes, be prepared.

Well I have been there 6 times and you will want shorts and skirts and tank tops. There is no offending the Thai folks wearing summer clothing. Their climate requires that kind of attire. Also, for going out, I would suggest some kind of summer dress or similar wear. You will be doing a lot of walking so definitely bring some comforable sandals and walking shoes.

Bangkok is a big city and very very busy. You will fall in love with Phuket though. Much more laid back and cleaner and the Thai people are so wonderful - you will have a great time.

I agree with Mouse-Lala's response, but only insofar as Phuket is concerned. That beach-resort island is very laid back, and informal dress is quite OK. However, I wouldn't recommend shorts/tank tops in Bangkok, except if you're hanging around the pool at the hotel. And, if you're going to visit any temples, or the King's palace (for example) in Bangkok, such attire would be especially inappropriate.
