Welcome to Beijing - my hometown!
April is a good season, it's not cold any more and you will see a lot of blooming and green there. So you can pack light for your trip. Sometimes there is sandstorm in Spring time, so the rain might be better for you! :-)

You can easily buy an umbrella in Beijing for less than RMB20 so there is no need to bring an umbrella all the way from the other side of the world (especially since it was probably made in China anyway).
In April, it should be just perfect weather, middle of spring but not yet humid & hot like it would be in summer. You could bring a light jacket for the nights if you don't like a little chill. Depends really, a lot of my friends from Canada think the winter in China is weak winter but these guys are tough season winter people who are use to 10 feet of snow every year.

I am a Chinese man , And I can tell you ,
The weather during April is good , you should not take thick heavy jackets,
Sometimes it is rain ,but you should not take umbrella ,because anything in Beijng is VERY cheap.

The weather will usually be mild (at least for my taste, I live in Yellowknife!), between the low 60s F to mid 70s, and relatively dry. Beside, no need to bring anything, if you need to get a warmer jacket, an umbrella or cK underwear, just get it from a local store or one of the markets for little money.
Beijing is the showcase of China, truly a world capital worth exploring for its ancient and contemporay history, monuments, etc. and the economic boom of the past 10 years.

You not get any heavy rainstrom if your worry about that. The main problem are the sandstorms that blow up time to time in this month. But this mostly happens in the evening then the tempurature gets cooler. Other than that his time of year is mostly dry and sunny and spring like, most of the cherry blossom would be in bloom around about now. The only other problem is because its dry theres a lot of static in the air and I get completely annoyied with the amoult of electrial shocks I get in the daytime.

Be aware of the sand storm there. It would be nice if it rains.
