Spoiled poultry will often smell like dirty gym socks, musty and even a bit bitter. The metallic taste you had may have been the "bitterness". Slightly rancid poultry will even have a bitter and metallic smell after boiling. I'm sorry you had to experience this as it puts many people off poultry for quite a while.

i don't think the meat is spoiled but it has a peppery flavor as if I used half a shaker of pepper on it when in fact i did not use anything on the outside of the turkey. What I wonder causes the peppery taste??

It will most likely smell bad if you didn't check and have eaten all the evidence you might have a stomach ache or throw up..I wouldn't be too worried, just drink a few glasses of water, but if you get a fever or chills then see a doctor.

By the time it's bad you can smell it before you taste it.

dreadful I would suspect. Don't forget that it is a fowl and therefore very dangerous if eaten when spoilt. Best advice - throw it out

The first time you taste it, it will taste sour and very bitter. The second time you taste it, it will taste like sour and bitter vomit.
