I saved an email attachment in word and it converted to notepad, now I can't read it nor pull it out of notepa

All of the files I have written in Word have converted to Notepad, which is gobbldegoop. How can I make them readable and how do I stop this from reoccurring?

when you save an attachment make sure u "save as" .doc which is the ms word format. u pick what format u want it saved in dont let it pick for you.
