Read up on Maslow's Hierarchy of needs. It pertains to 7 levels of emotional needs. The first must be satisfied before the next and so forth.

The first 4 are deficiency needs:
1.Survival,
2. Safety,
3. Belonging,
4. Self-esteem.

The last 3 are being needs:
5. Intellectual Achievement,
6. Aesthetic Appreciation,
7.Self-Actualization.

A Self-Actualized person is able to understand his/her emotions on all levels and have empathy for others that may not be so developed.

Any entry Psychology book should have this and much more.

Check out an Educational Psychology book though, It teaches those wanting to be teachers not just what a concept is, but how to apply it.
