This might be hard for her to do,however she deserves respect from her mom and she shouldn't be talked to like that.Advise her to first try to tell her mom that calling her names is pointless and immature. She needs to talk to her mom and tell her exactly how she feels. Her moms disrespect is doing nothing but hurting her in the long run and that's only hurting her son, because when his moms hurt,he's hurt. She has to stay away from her mom if she can't respect her. They can talk on the phone every now and then.Sometimes we get along better with our parents when we keep our distance and see them every blue moon.

It looks alike your friend's mother is having some psychological problem. Instead of fighting back, tell your friend to talk to her mother in a deeper level. Mother usually don't say those things to her child unless she's really depressed and unsatisfied by own self.

The best thing you can do is 'be there' to listen to your friend complain about her mother, and tell her that the best thing she can do is 'ignore' her mother, even if to do that means that she won't see her or take her calls or call her. Not all mothers are good mothers, and some mothers are 'abusive' even to their grown up children.

How old is your friend? 16? 40? That will make a big difference in the advice you get.

why does she take this from her mom?
just tell her not to talk to her anymore or get away from her mom
if it's because of finacial problems
tell her to put on a smile and deal with it
