Depends how you look at it...(in my opinion)
Are you happy with a loving family, clean air, and land to roam around....but be a little poor and survive paycheck to paycheck, with no car, a tiny house, and try your hardest to provide a future for your family
or
would you like to have a lot of money, polluted air, drive a nice car, eat whatever you want, not have many wide open spaces, and wonder about the future of the world?

I think our ancestors were a lot happier than we are today. We seem to live in a society where no matter how much we have, we're never content. Families were closer back then, children for the most part lived in the same town as their extended family and had emotional support not only from their mom and dad, but from grandma and grandpa, aunts and uncles and even cousins.
Our ancestors didn't worry about global warming or terrorists flying aircraft into their buildings. My ancestors were all immigrants from Europe who came to America in the mid to late 1800's, not because of religious persecution but for economic improvement. Many immigrants back then knew what it meant to sacrifice things for the greater good of their family, and to them it meant something to file for citizenship in their new homeland and to get the benefits of being an AMERICAN legally.
Back then, there was no system to play. They all worked hard for what they had and appreciated it. However, when someone was down on their luck, it wasn't uncommon for the whole community to work together to get them on their feet.
I'm not saying that its not that way today, but I am saying that it seems that many members of our society are never happy, not matter how much they get. There are members of our society that think we owe them something just because they're here and there are people who feel that they should have all the rights of a citizen of our nation without contributing an ounce of effort to it.
My ancestors didn't have glamorous jobs. Many of them were farmers who worked from sun up to sun down and toiled hard to make a good living. They were the backbone of their society. Today, it is all we can do to pull the members of our society off the couch and make them appreciate the good people and things in their lives.
Yes, I do think that our ancestors were a happier and more content group.

I would go with our ancestors because families were closer and they didn't rely on technology to get by. Go ask an Amish and see what their answer would be. I have never seen a sad amish other than when that crazy man killed those girls. None of their children are on ridelin and their family all lives within a 5 mile radius.

It has to be us today. Many of my ancestors had to give up their children to other family members for various reasons. A lot of the men died during the civil war, and their wives couldn't take care of the children. The government refused to give them anything stating the men weren't in the army long enough to collect anything, even though they died while fighting or marching from North to South. A lot of mine died before reaching the age of 60 too. Back then they didn't have medicines for a lot of things, nor even diagnosed them properly. So many died then from simple things that we can easily fix today. Both of my grandmothers lost children to pneumonia, and both had miscarriages a few times. Probably from having to do farm work while pregnant. Don't forget the depressions we had either. My one grandfather only owed $50 on his farm when he lost it. It was a lot back then, but he also had 7 children to provide for. I don't think many people today could go through what they had to go through back then. It might be nice for a little while, but not for months or years.

That's an interesting question.
My first response would be to say us, obvioulsy. Then I started to think about the epidemic of depression, mental illness, suicide, divorce, substance abuse, internet porn, etc.
Our ancestor's didn't worry much about those things. They were too busy eeking out a living to say things like, "you're not making me happy anymore."

I asked my Grandmother that once. she said we definately have it easier today (6 yrs ago appx) w/ modern technology. I guess if having everything at your fingertips makes you happier then today. We definately have more financial stability then years ago. I think our ancestors worked very hard and happiness was secondary.

Our ancestors, they had it a lot EASIER than we did in many ways. They didn't have the type of worries that we do today.

It depends on the situation.....if u live by today probably you are not happy with yesterday's lives, yet if u were born by yesterday probably you will find yourself happy in anyway and feel contented with what you have.
