Hi - I'm starting a free community magazine in my area. There is definitely a demand for it and I know it will be successful. I need to have ads because it will be free. I'm thinking about running all of the ads for FREE in the first issue (yes I will accrue some debt) but I think it will be hard to sell ads if I don't have proof that it will be a good magazine. My question is how to I get them to allow me to place the free ads? Do I make cold calls? Do I just walk in and tell them and ask? I do know some bus owners personally and that'll be easier. I thought about going to my bank - who do I ask for? The bank president? Or do I specifically ask for the person in charge of public relations/marketing? Please share with me any advice - it is greatly appreciated. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cold call with your glowing and charismatic personality. Give away the first ad, and tell business owners that you will return in two weeks to gage the results. Tell them this is a test run only, to see what response businesses get, so that you will have a better idea of the value of your ad space. No catch for the business, stress that. You just would like an honest assessment. Chat it up, make friends. You're selling yourself with this first conversation. Sell your ad space the next time around, after receiving positive feedback.

I suggest you do half-price ads for the first issue, but call it an introductory rate. The term "half-price" makes it sound like something they won't want in on.

I think I'd do a combination of phone and personal visitation. I imagine you'll do better in person, though.

With the bank, you'll want the branch manager.

You might perk up community interest by offering free non-business classified ads. You also might want to visit the local Chamber of Commerce and see what you might stir up there.

Make a list of Owners/Advertisers in other publications and target those and similar companies.
Email, Mail, Call and Visit...give introductory advertising specials...call and do research on competitors...try to find out how they get their advertising and duplicate...

Hard Work pays off.

i think you should introduce your magazine to some companies, restaurants, etc. and get their ADs.on the second step it would be effective to introduce your magazine with above content to top companies and famous restaurants and get their ADs.
Be successful
