I had my gallbladder removed. The surgery was less harmless than the excruciating pains I had from the gallstones. I woke up and I didn't know they were already done. They only made three tiny incisions. The doctor said years ago they would have cut a long diagonal section through the abdomen and healing would take much much longer and would be more painful.
These days the gallbladder surgery isn't bad at all. I imagine getting gallstones removed is even less of a problem.
By the way: a sister, who also had gallstones, said labor pains aren't as painful as gallstones. I'm a male, so I don't know anything about how bad labor pains are, but I would lay in bed for hours with excruciating pain. I'm glad my stones are gone =)
About worrying: Philippians 4:6-17
--Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.--
Most importantly, for all of us, is that 2 Corinthians 5:17 happens to us because of John 3:3!

Can you die? Yes. EVERY surgical procedure carries risk.
However, you can also die from having gallstones (if they get stuck in the duct and cause liver dysfunction), and either one being fatal is an extremely unlikely possibility.
In otherwise healthy people, the risk of cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal) is low. She'll feel better after having it done.
If she is nervous before the surgery, her doctor may be able to prescribe a calming drug (like Valium) for her to take the night before and morning of surgery.
I wish her the best of luck with her upcoming surgery.

I have had my gall bladder removed due to gall stones. That was around 20 years ago and I am very much alive. My Grandmother had it done. and she lived, my dad had it done and lived.
The worst she will suffer is soreness for a while, but she will in no wise die.
The fact is, when I had it done it was like butchery. Today they have a less invasive proceedure and she will not take near as long as it did me to recover from the soreess. My mother had the newer surgery done (just two small holes) about 3 years ago. Until she has the surgery, she will suffer pain needlessly from those stones.

Gall bladder surgery does not kill. Explain to your mother that even without any surgery ripe old age kills.
