Maybe because Jesus said "I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life, no one comes to the Father but by Me."
The - meaning singular, the only, the one way.

To assert otherwise would be disastrous (at least for most religions). How can you explain irreconcilable differences in teachings? To openly (this word is important) admit that each religion is true, would basically say that religion is made up. They would admit that religion is just conceived by humans. The differences would prove that their religion is just the manifestation of their ancestors' idea of God. And they would not or can not admit this.

A true practitioner would not assert that their religion is the one true religion.
Some of the religion i know, they never claim that their religion has the one and the only 'truth'. in fact, as far as i concern, any religion which claim that they have 'one and the only truth' has no idea what's the true is.
Those religion welcome people to explore, encourage people study, ask question, and let people to decide whether the teaching is for them or not, even people would like to study in those religion but don't feel really to be the follower, they would still feel welcome.

Because that is what they are taught. Abrahamic religions all say that their particular religion is the only true one. And within the religions most sects claim that their particular sect is the only true one.
It is quite likely that any approach that is positive and teaches love and caring for yourself and your neighbor is the "right" approach. But THAT thinkin' don't keep folks in the pews!

It is rather unusual to meet people who enjoy being wrong that is why they will defend their decision after picking a religion because of what is at stake (their soul). To get it wrong is something most minds can't bare due to the pressure some religions put on the person to support it or perish. Many as you know will do whatever it takes to maintain their "BELIEF" I chose to know what is going to happen from personal experience, for me nothing else was good enough... believing my soul would survive would not do, I just had to know.

I completely agree with you! Anyone who says theirs is the true religion is arrogant & ignorant in my opinion. We could all be wrong, I think. My beliefs just happen to be what I think is right. In no way do I ever say I'm totally right. I could very well be wrong but that's a risk I'm willing to take. Great question by the way!!

It is our nature as human being to pass our beliefs, our traditions, our prejudice and even our fears to our children. Humans beings, as all of natures creatures, are programed to pass our physical and social traits to further generations. Life just wants to be, and millions of years of evolution wants to prevail, and we want our ideas and our genes to continue on to our offspring. Religion has become part of the evolutionary process and every individual truly believes that their approach is the best, therefore, our personal interpretation of religion is the one true religion.

Because with most religions if you truly believe in that religion then you are saying that the "holy" being/s involved are "the one" above all. You can not truly believe in your god if you believe that there may be another god as well. It negates the very definition of god in most religions.
