I read this sentence in a book but didn't understand meaning of ( given free rein ) - the sentence is :
the human mind is capable of over 60000 thoughts a day, and ,given free rein ,more than 90 percent of them are the same ones you had the day before .

Giving something free rein is like letting it do it's own thing; by itself, without control.

Free rein means that there are no constraints or limits. If you let the reins of a horse fall away, the horse will do as it pleases. In this context, if you did not self-limit yourself, this is what would occur
