Instead of tacky decals or stick on stars, or even Christmas lights, I would go for the tiny little fiber optic ones. String them up, paint the cords to match your ceilings, etc.

You may just want to use the twilight idea as an inspiration for color and art, and don't try too hard to make it look like any actual outdoor scene.

a great color for the walls with a twilight theme would be to paint the bottom half of the walls an eggplant color and the top half a pale lavender/mauve. furniture could be a silvery pearl grey with just a hint of lilac.there are some very cool star shaped light fixtures at IKEA . Use some pewter candlesticks and pewter knobs on furniture, light switch and outlet covers. for a light fixture, use a large rice-paper globe or a nice pewter chandelier with crystals. for accents use white, grey, silver, and all shades of grey/blue, and grey/purple, mauve, lilac, lavender.

I just came off a phase where I used a large Van Gogh(starry night) but I found it too powerful, it depends on your temperment. You might look for a night theme triple panel. search eBay for themes you like art paintings posters and prints(make sure you can afford the postage) You might also try a blue/ black paint with greens and reds. go with powerful shapes and dark subtle hues for the furniture and lamps(maybe a green shaded gooseneck lamp The height of you furniture should have variety. Carpet color and texture will support your theme tremendously, a dark blue green that can be seen with clarity in low light will help set off your decor.

You can make your own stars, moon and planets by cutting them out on paper first, making them different sizes. If your wall is already white ,lightly taping the inside of the cutout and tack them to your wall and when you paint your wall in the soft twilight colors, you then remove the paper and your stars, moon and planets will be silhouetted on the wall.
