We have 10 yr old male tabby maine-**** mix DLH approx 12 lbs. We cannot be certain but believe he slipped out & was hit by a car last night & somehow got back inside where he pooped on carpet & was panting & crying & dragging himself as he couldn't use his back legs. We brought to emergency vet, inital exam showed trauma but no broken bones. Further overnight observation, blood testing & xrays showed fluid in lungs, blood in urine, muscle damage & minimal internal bleeding. Vet is optimistic with time cat will get better & says these symptoms & this severe trauma most likely indicate hit by car. Cat has good blood flow to legs & can feel & use them but very painful so he won't. He is breathing better today & less blood in urine but will stay overnight to minimize stress & chance of relapse on lungs. What is the outlook on recovery & how long? Vet says he'll probably start walking in about 2 weeks. I am so upset someone hit him like he was nothing & kept going but WE LOVE HIM VERY MUCH

well...our poor cat died this morning of a heart attack caused by either the trauma or a clot that travelled to the heart. the vet was very surprised as cat was doing fine up to the attack, he was there and immediately administered cpr and drugs to restart heart but poor puff's heart just wouldn't restart. my family and i are just heartbroken and i have been crying all day. thank you to those who answered...

I am so sorry to hear about your cats accident. It will be a while until he gets better. It might be a few weeks or maybe even a month before he gets back to normal. It's sad when people hit an animal and don't stop. It's something that happens every day. They have no heart, and no feelings for the animal or it's owners. Just listen to your vet. Ask lots of questions, I'm sure he wil guide you to your cats recovery. Once kitty is home, just let him do what he can do. If you see he needs help getting in and out of his litter box, etc. Give him a hand. Kitty will get better with each passing day. Keep an eye on his appetite too, let him have easy access to water as well. If you let him outside after wards, keep a close eye on him so this won't happen again. Follow your veterinarians advice and if you have any concerns or questions please make sure to call his office for help. I really hope kitty will get better soon. I was so saddened when I read your questions. Take good care of that sweet heart of yours.

A 15 year old cat? Recovery is going to long and hard on you both. The vet I imagine will try and wire the jaw in order to stabilize it, if it is broken and can be repaired. Your cat will probably need to be on a strict soft food/gruel/liquid diet until all healed. I also imagine the vet will put your cat on pain medication and antibiotics. FINISH all meds as instructed and do NOT stop just because you think your cat is better. FOLLOW all vet instructions and hopefully your cat will make a full recovery. Good luck and sorry

The fact that he still has good blood flow and feeling to the back legs is a good sign, as well as the blood and fluid resolving. As long as he continues to do so, I would say his chances are good, he may never walk normally again if there was any kind of nerve damage but that doesnt mean he wont have a happy, healthy life. The most important thing with injured cats is to make sure to keep them as pain free as possible, as they usually wont eat if they hurt. He'll probably need some strict confinement after coming home, just take his recovery slowly. Good luck

my moms cat was hit last summer; had a cracked pelvis; plus he was clawed by another cat.. Yes, he was in pain, but he's tough:) Just make sure he isn't dehydrated; mom squirted water into her cats mouth with a syringe. Keep calm when you are around him; your cat must love you too; and won't like to see you upset! Try not to let anybody startle him; because he would react and it would be painful for him. Within a month; mom's cat was improving very fast; we had to keep him from trying to run!
It sounds like yours is already getting better; good luck!!

cars rarely see a cat when they are hit, and I am sure they didn't mean to do it, but I am a belilever in if you love your cat, keep it safe and indoors. most deaths of cats in the US are caused by hit by car. He will take a long tine to recover, make him comfortable and be patient. But why waste the money at the vet if you are going to put him back in harms way again?
