My dog is a 2 1/2 year old choc. lab and was sneezing a lot over the weekend with an occassional what sounded like he was trying to breathe out of his nose all of a sudden when he is just lieing there. I took him to the docs and they said he looks fine to try Benadryl Allergy. He has only had one dose but is still making that sound. We live in FL and not sure if it's the warmer weather we are experiencing but he has never had this problem before. Has anyone ever experienced this with their pet? Thanks!

Yes I have and what your dog is doing is called a reverse sneeze, sounds bad, but it's not, it's not life threatening, but it is caused by allergic lung disease big bad term for asthma. Ask your doctor to give Chloranphenaramine tablets. Those used to stop my dalmations asthma attacks really quickly. Benadryl is okay, but sedates more than necessary. If it is just seasonal, it will go through this 2 times a year in the spring and fall. I've been in Florida this time of year and everything is blooming, I'm sure that's what's doing it. Sometimes they get them kinda bad and drool a bit while they are doing it, but they should be okay. My dog lived a long healthy life with this. Good luck

PS I wouldn't recommend the baby afrin in the nose, dogs noses are so far more advanced and sensitive, they are not meant to be medicated the same ways that ours are. That guy should also get the Chloranphaneramine tabs. No dog nasal washes either! Not good for them! Damages the passageways.

Yes, I have the same thing going on here. I spent thousands trying to find out what it is and here is the results.
Its called rineietis (sp) similar to our sinusitis. Cronic problem mostly from allergies. Benydryl and believe it or not baby affrin in the nose 2 times a day.
The noise you hear is called a reverse sneeze and it is not harmful, just sounds terrible. The snot is the hardest part to deal with, but I've taught mine to go outside when the attacks happen or come to me and I'll take care of it with a kleenex. They know the kleenex after a few times telling them to come to you. And they are grateful for it.
It's a condition that can't be cured. Don't let them talk you into taking the dog in for a nose clean, that was a disaster and very painful for my pup. They also talked us into some really expensive medicine and I only used 2 drops when I realized that wasn't the answer either as that was blown all over the kitchen.

could be a sinus infection, in which case he would need prescribed medication to treat that. at least that's how it goes in humans, and i think dogs can get sinus infections too.
