You don't have to have an active imagination to have a personal relationship with God. He is the one that makes you reborn and and the Holy Spirit opens your eyes/soul to see and believe the things that dead men cannot imagine, nor want to imagine. I suppose your imagination would increase. Just look at CS Lewis he didn't write the Narnia books until after his conversion to Christianity.

You don't hear direct words but God teachings you through daily living and through His word. If I have a problem with anger and one guy at work really pisses me off I use this to grow closer to God by loving my neighbor when I don't want to. Also, meditation and prayer leads you closer as you learn more about yourself and how God wants you to use your gifts to benefit others. Learning from Scripture who God is helps you grow closer as well. He is all knowing, pure Good and pure Love so when you feel these these things you can feel His presence. The idea of hearing direct words from God is dangerous and usually self-deception but direct revelation does happen to a very limited amount of people (prophets, saints)

Worse yet, it involves living off the imagination of other men who first thought up of God. Zero proof, but a heck of an incentive for believing. It's an easy sell given the though processes of humans. Sadly, smarmy televangelists take advantage of that.

No. Truly imaginitive people know when they're imagining things. Having a personal relationship with god is more akin to schizophrenia.

Yes, it certainly does. I'm convinced that people just hear their own thoughts or "words" and think that they're coming from God and then they feel important and "spiritual". Some people are just better at doing this than others.

if you had no eyes, or were completely blindfolded, and I used a flashlight to signal morse code at your eyes, would that mean I was not sending a message(talking) or that you simply were not receiving it?

my point is rather that God does "talk" in a sense, its not like our language, but there is communication there.

It takes an even greater imagination to imagine the suffering of our fellow man...
