My hair is now medium lenght, 2 3inches below shoulder. The color is reddish/brown. The roots came out so I have like 2 inches of dark brown hair. I want to bleach my hair at home using Clairol "Herbal Essences" bleach blonde lightenig kit. I've never used it so I want to know it its ok. Then I want to die my hair with L'oreal "Natural Match" light ash blonde 9c cool shade. If I die my hair right after bleaching or the next day will it be ok? I just don't want to go to school with bleached hair, I assume it will be orange or yellow which I do not want.

Well I have almost black hair naturally with red so probably much like yours and when I was in high school I wanted a red orange color (Im weird I know) and with my luck it was just what I wanted red orange but not something anyone else liked. I did it myself. I liked it I always liek different things. However my sister tried the same thing her hair and hers turned green. Im not going to tell you not to do it because I honestly dont know how it would turn out for you. But what I would do is go to a GOOD salon one where the girls look hip and really seem to know what they are talking about. Then ask them how can you achieve the look you want. Maybe have them do it first then tell them you cant afford to continue to go to a salon how can you achieve this look at home on your own. Or you can try a sally beauty supply and ask them what they have there and how to do it. All the stores I've gone in the girls there are really nice and seem to know what they're talking about. I found this site after I wrote this check it out. Good luck.

Also recently I dyed my hair black on accident trying to get the blonde highlights that had grown out to go back to my drark brown red color. So I tried a color that was supposed to lighten it and I did it a week after dyeing it black and well ummm my hair has this really weird color in it. Once again I kinda liked it so I lleft it I decided to just let it grown out this time and probably never dye it again. But I use "dumb blonde" by tigi it's a deep conditioner which by the way isnt just for blondes. I only shampoo every other day and on the days I dont shampoo I put the deep conditioner in 10 minutes prior to my shower then wash it out in the shower. my hair is real healthy now too. I know you probably dont need to hear all this blab but I figure if I give you some of my tips I might as well give all of them. When you wash your hair you wash out all the sebum which is basically your hairs natural grease which keeps it healthy. When you condition it you kind of protect your hair so if you wash every other day the sebum is in there long enough to keep your hair soft anf shiny.

DO NOT use anything with ash in it..it will turn the bleach blonde hair a gray/purple/green..the "ash" in the dye grabs onto the bleached hair because the bleached hair is so porous it will grab any undertone in the dye which is the ash in light ash blonde..trust me,my mom did this and her hair looked horrible..all the bleached hair was a purplish gray..be very careful..and with your reddish brown hair..the bleach might turn it an orage-ish tint..i suggest calling a salon or even the number on the dye box and asking for advice on what to do..definitely..good luck

Uh yup, you are looking at orange or yellow hair. Specially with Herbal Essences hair bleach. You want to do this yourself? Hook up with a Beauty Supply store. Here in Michigan, we have "Sally's Beauty Supply". Look around your area.
They will advise you what to use on your hair for the best results. Anything you buy at KMart or Walmart in hair coloring will not do the best job for you.
By the way, the beauty supply stores are even less expensive, and a much better, true-to-color product.
OR spring the big bucks to have it professionally done the first time, then you can follow up with the cheap stuff.
Let us know how it worked out!

Herbal essence is about the best "box color" so that is ok to use. I would have to see your hair to tell you how it is going to come out. But it will be fine as far as the chemicals go, it wont fall out or anything. It will turn orange before it turns blonde just let it. then when it is blonde put on the color you want. P.S what City do you live in? if you live close I could Help you!

Most hair colors say in the instructions that you need to wait (I think at least a week) before recoloring. Doing it too soon may make your hair break off. Instead of bleaching it first why don't you just use a good dark blond hair color - like L'oreal.

Be careful while doing this because YOUR HAIR CAN FALL OUT IF ITS NOT DONE RIGHT . Half of these girls don't even know what they are talking about. If you bleach out your hair YOU CANNOT DIE IT PERMANENT RIGHT AFTER , you have to RINSE it with a temp dye or your hair will fall out , that's too much stress on the hair also if you do bleach it you cannot perm or put in a permanent dye for about 6-8 weeks

I agree with Hope...I'm 26 and have been coloring my hair for about 10 years now.. My advice to you you can color right after but better yet!!!
After coloring first time shampoo really really good.... and put conditioner in for at least 20 it works wonders.. then you can when your hair is dry..but for best results wait a day or two to re-color...
Bleaching can make your hair funky color yes but it lightens thats the hole point of doing it first if you deside to go lighter expecially if you got red in your hair......and Natural match is very very good to use.. Also next time try to use Lorel preference thats amazing too.....Good luck..
and deep condition for 20 min every couple of days for a while to advoid dry hair.....

I did that 2 weeks ago and i STRONGLY advise against it. Your hair isn't naturally light enough for the bleach to take your hair past orange to the light yellow you need. Natural Match is permanent, and it's never a good idea to put permanent dye over freshly bleached hair. I turned my hair orange then put a semi-permanent shade over it, and it did nothing. The next day I spent $200 to have it fixed at a salon. As the hairdresser that fixed my hair told me, I had several things working against me:
-Hair too dark to begin with
-Home bleach kit not strong enough
-Toner not strong enough
If I were you I wouldn't gamble. If you want to be blond, go to a pro. And have you thought about root touch up? Not that you'd get the results you wanted doing what you want to do now, but how on earth do you expect to touch up your roots at home?
Edit:
Ok and whoever voted my answer thumbs-down clearly isn't a hairdresser... if this girl listens to me she will avoid tears. I wish i had someone tell me or my hair would not have turned orange :)

Yes you can, that's what I did. You have to bleach dark hair to get the color out of it before you can get it to be any kind of light color that doesn't have dark still in it. It's safe just be sure to use conditioner for color treated hair, it puts extra moisture into your hair.
