What is the purpose of the mainspring housing latch on the back of the grip?

The latch releases the mainspring. That's how you break the pistol down for thorough cleaning.

I have a Mark II and believe, it can be tedious.

The manual you should have gotten with the gun should explain how to break it down. If you don't have a manual, Ruger is very good about supplying them.

As mentioned it is to allow the gun to be broken down and cleaned. Using a paper clip or the flat edge of a screwdriver will open the latch to allow cleaning. Get the manual to see how to properly disassemble and re-assemble the Mark III as they can be a pain in the buttocks to get back together.
