ugh, I got selected for jury duty in April 07....but I start a new job anytime soon (they're doing a backround check) Will they give me the time off to serve my jury duty ? Will it make me look bad because I would be fairly new, and am already taking time off ? Need some opinions !

You can call the courthouse and postpone. You can only do it once per summons though, so you're out of luck if you've already done this.

Yes, you will have time off. They have to give it to you; it's the law. It won't make you look bad at all. Everyone, even your employers, know that jury duty is mandatory and just a fact of life. It won't be seen as you taking time off.

Depending on your employer, you might get paid for the jury duty time. However, you might also be required to give your employer the money you are paid for jury duty (which is completely legal of them to do).

When you are hired on, inform your new employer asap that you have been selected for jury duty for April 07. They should give you time off because it is required of you by the courts to show up. It is an excusable absence in most cases. Have the documentation handy if they ask questions. Good luck!!

First of all Jury Duty is part of the responsibility that balances the rights you enjoy as a citizen. By law you are allowed off any job to attend jury duty. As for looking bad tell your new employer in advance. If they give you a hard time then they are not worth working for anyway.

The system needs to be supported by every citizen or it just falls apart and zip away goes your right!

Your "ugh" isn't very nice. Take the above guy's suggestion and postpone if you have to (they're usually very flexible). It's one of the few civic duties Americans have. Besides, most of the pool gets sent home, once the lawyers start rejecting anyone that looks like they might be too intelligent or biased toward one side or the other, or whatever. And jury duty isn't "taking time off!"

You can validly request to be excused from a jury duty because of employment.

Ask to be excused for the reasons given, i.e., new job that you don't want to jeopardize for $5 an hour.
