Nice generalization. The vast majority of men I know who wear turbans are Sikhs, and of course, the locals (i.e., Americans) are fully aware that they're Sikh. The Muslim women and Mennonites also wear headcoverings. Next, you'll probably be suggesting that we can't tell them difference between them, either.

Because my friend, Americans are poorly educated and it gets worse and worse in the Public School System. They can't teach students about various religions because it pisses off athiests or someone who just had a bad day so went to the ACLU. Kids come home and turn on the TV or computer before they would crack a book, much less one about history. The Sikhs are strong people and as Angophile I am quite fond of them (besides the fact that my nuerologist is one). And the thing on OBL's is not really a turban, it is a ratty bunch of cloth wrapped around an empty shell. People forget that many religious items and observances of today are ancient in origin and there were reasons for them. Those long robes and head covers weren't for air conditioning in the Arab desert, it kept the person from getting burned and getting sunstroke.
As an American, I am ashamed at Americans inability to learn beyond a narrow scope of what is fed to them in school and by the media.

One must be able to identify the way the Turban is worn to know rather one is Islamic or Sikhs.

Americans do not learn about religion in schools unless it is a particular religions school. Americans are not taught a whole lot about other cultures. They don't know how to tell the difference between a muslim or Sikh, most don't even know what Sikhs religion is or have never even heard of it.

I thought a lot of indian people also wore turbans. I certainly don't think someone is muslim just because they happen to wear a certain type of clothing.

Ignorance. Indeed, all the chaps I have seen wearing turbans are Sikhs. (One such is a clerk at a local convenience store.)

Probably because of Khomeni!
It is stilly, isn't it!
Turbins are the dress of Shiks, not the average rank and file Muslim!
Muslims, essentially, wear a type of Sailor cap or a scull cap that is larger than the Jewish one.

we do not learn about religion in school.
why do the vast majority of Muslims assume that Americans are Christians?
as for why we do think that way, it is what the media force feeds to every one of us every day.
not an excuese, but a reason. even if it is not a good one.
