"Wiccans what are your answers to this guys ?s?

What type of religion is Wicca?"

Wicca is a contemporary Pagan religion with spiritual roots in the earliest expressions of reverence of nature as a manifestation of the divine. Wicca views Deity as Goddess and God; thus it is polytheistic. It also embraces the practice of magick and reincarnation. Religious festivals are held in observance of the Full Moon and other astronomical and agricultural phenomena.

"Who founded it and when?"

Gerald Gardner around 1954. To those that say it is wrong, they are wrong. Even Christianity was "new" once. And as stated above, Wicca has it's roots in beliefs that predate Christianity by thousands and thousands of years.

"What are the true names of the Lord and Lady?"

To me... The God and the Goddess.

"State your coven and lineage."

Don't need one. Worrying about coven and lineage is stuff for fluffy bunnies.

"What is the Elemental Weapon of Ether?"

There is none. The elemental weapons are:
• The Fire Wand
• The Water Cup
• The Air Dagger, and
• The Earth Pentacle

Ether means "spirit" in Western Wicca terms. There is no "weapon of the spirit". If there was you would not be true Wiccan since being a Wiccan Warrior is about love of spirit, not war of spirit.

"He told me there is no way possible for a person to be Solitary and devote or Intitate them selfs into wicca without a coven what do you guys think?"

He is wrong and as small-minded ans Fundie Christians. Scott Cunningham is a very respected Wiccan and the author of many books about Wicca, and he was a solitary. Only the ego insists that solitaries can not exist, and Wicca is not about ego. In true Wicca you are neither above, nor below anyone else. If you believe you are, you are not following the Wiccan Way.

first off i am not Wiccan i am a Celtic Pagan.

What type of religion is Wicca?

earth based. derived form early european pagan traditions.

Who founded it and when?

Gerald Gardner, 1950's. there is NO evidence to even suggest the existence of Wicca before this time. not saying that the religion is not legit just that it is new.

What are the true names of the Lord and Lady?

they are not to be spoken to anyone that is not Wicca. and in sepcific not to be spoken to anyone that is not a direct coven descendent of Gerald Gardner. and in general true names, are never given by the gods because of the power that they hold.
(this is a doctrine of British Traditional Witchcraft that i do not agree with. it leads to the idea that nobody but them can be Wicca.)

State your coven and lineage.

i would gladly tell him to screw off here, it is no business of his.
however if i had any respect for him i could indeed trace my lineage back to Medieval Germany. and to Ireland back into the dark ages. and show quite a few rather interesting characters along the way. that include Viking warriors, and a well known U.S. Presidential assassin.

What is the Elemental Weapon of Ether? you MUST be joking.

the BTW's are a very stuck up lot. they are strict on their traditions, and many of them claim that Wicca is the oldest religion in the world. i view many of them in about the same light as i view fundamentalist Christians. "my way or no way" types to say the least.
in a religion that stresses a personell connection with the gods and also that every member is a priest/priestess where do they get off telling people that they cannot possibly be Wicca. the secrets are out. there is simply too much mainstream information on Wicca for it to even be considered Occult anymore.

and furthermore the whole "only we know the true names of the lord/lady" crap that they spew. Gerald Gardners writings hint that Cerunuuos was his patron but nothing solid. how does the rest of the world know that some power hungry person did not want to create an elite society and therefore add things and doctrines to the religion.

the Reede says "as it harm none do what ye will" what do i harm by following the religion withour your permission. nothing.
but what do you harm by telling me that i cannot follow a religion of my choice...as far as i am concerned EVERYTHING.

i hate titles, but BTW's seem only to respect thoes with impressive sounding titles. so i have included the ones that i have a legal right to call myself by. if you plan on forewarding this to him please do so, but cut this note off of it.

Blessed be and be blessed sister.

Not sure why Darin feels the need to be an ***.
Everyone has pretty much answered your questions pretty well so no need for me to rehash any of that.

On the subject of being a solitary witch, there are several ways to be a solitary witch; you can be born one, you can be trained by one, you can self train as one.

On the subject of being Wiccan, true Wiccan, not the revised edition most young folks claim. I have nothing against folks joining the craft. My problem is folks trying to claim something they did not earn. Those who founded Wicca wanted it to be special, so it was made into an initiatory system that had rules, contrary to popular opinion, and a set way for thing to be done.

With the new age explosion, many saw Wicca as the new "Pop Religion", with books and sites telling folks that anybody could be Wiccan, all they had to do is want to be one. Lots of folks want to be doctors, lawyers, pilots, and priests, but it takes more than just saying so to make it so.

There is only one way to be truly Wiccan, that is by being brought into a coven and trained. Youy can dedicate yourself to the path of Wicca, but initiation by it's very definition is not something you can do yourself. To be of the Wicca is to declare that you are a priest or priestess of the Lord and Lady, with all that goes with that.

Are there Solitary Wiccans? Yes, there are folks who after being coven trained and getting to whatever level they felt called to achieve, have gone there own way and work solitary.

To Chris J.
Not all BTWs are either stuck up or snobby, nor are all of us impressed by titles. I'm far more impressed by what people do than whatever flashy name tag they have.

I have noticed however that a lot of folks call themselves wiccan either because they really don't know what wiccan is or because they think it sounds more impressive than saying "I'm a Witch" or "I'm a Pagan".

I think he is some very disturbed person. Email him back and tell him to mind his own business and not to bother you again. Then have him ignored. Wicca needs no church or coven and you are just as Wiccan as any. Wicca is the search for wisdom, why does that need someone else?

LOL... congratulations! You've run into a Fundie Wiccan.

And he's wrong. There are plenty of Wiccans practicing solitary, as much as the "old school" Wiccans might dislike it. It's a natural evolution of the religion.

If you're talking to a British Traditional Wiccan, you might find them calling non-BTWs "Neo-Wiccans", but that's their call to make. It doesn't mean the rest of us have to bow down and blindly accept their pronouncements.

And actually, I find his questions both insulting and preposterous. For one thing, the details he's asking for as far as the "true names" are specific to each initiated Tradition -- there's no way you would know the ones he's referring to unless you were also an initiate into his particular Tradition, and in any case, if you DID know them you wouldn't be giving them out lightly. And someone who says "state your coven and lineage" as if you were a prisoner of war... *shakes head*

He's an extreme Gardernarian variety, ignore him. I like regular Gardies, as something not all fluffy, but he's a fluffy in his own way.

And that "names question is just stupid. No one would give those out without full and complete confidence the person being told was initiated.

He doesn't deserve to get any answers. You deserve a better teacher, and you can find one by throwing a rock into any Pagan gathering and hitting one, believe me. He's a bully and a jerk.

Well I'm not Wiccan but I am pagan and I would have just deleted his e-mail. You don't need to prove yourself to that guy...
Some people need to mind their own business. This includes all those "more pagan than thous" that are almost as bad as some of the christians I used to hear from before I blocked my e-mail.
Peace

Edit: No problem. I aim to please...

~sigh~

I would not answer them, personally.

As to the rest - an initiation is, indeed, passed from one person to another. You can self-dedicate, but not self-initiate.

And I know hard Gards who are the least pretentious and most friendly people you can imagine.
