I believe that the loss of our worlds biodiversity is the single greatest "tragedy of the commons" in human history. Did you know that approximatly 5,000 species become extinct, FOREVER, every single day, 365 days a year, for the past 20 years. This is according to a decade long study out of Harvard in collaboration with hundreds of universities world-wide. Did you also know that recently they found a very rare cure for lung cancer in one kind of species in Costa Rica, but when they went back to collect more samples, the one single tree of its species that remained had been clear-cut and burned along with about 1000 hectares of land around it? They tried to synthesize the compound from the collected leaves, but to no avail. It will never be a reality for medicine. And that happens every day in companies like MERCK and Libby and others that have privitized and capatilized on keeping people alive, or so they claim. The biggest and worst natural disaster is what man is doing to the planet earth. We don't own it, we are simply stewards and as such should be more responsible about how we use the natural resources and which incrediple animal or plant we are endangering or eradicating in the process of "progress". Think before we leap. Its got to stop!
