I took accounting because of money, but now I realize that I should have taken what I love to do, visual arts. I'm in my mid-twenties and would graduate when I'm thirty if I went back. Has anyone here ever gone back to college after graduating for a totally different major? Was it worth it? Or maybe just forget about school?

I am doing this right now! I graduated with a degree in creative writing (which I love to do, but only on my own and not as a discipline or career), and now I'm going back for a Master's in the sciences. It is TOTALLY worth it, because you have to do what you love. It doesn't matter how old you are when you get out, what matters is that you'll be doing what you love. Since you already have an accounting degree, why not try to graduate with a Master's in something new instead of just getting another Bachelor's? That way you move up in terms of the education ladder, so to speak, and you're doing what you love.

I'm in the same boat with you. I was really excited when I started college and had a lot of fun taking all of the general ed. coursework, but never really considered what I "really" wanted to do in college. I somehow drifted into business college and started coursework there, still not knowing what I wanted, then somehow I am majoring in economics. Now that I realize the types of careers that this degree offers, it has made me become uninterested in this major, even though I am very close to graduating. I really have an interest in electronics and I was considering attenteding a vocational school in order to receive some certifications. But I think I might just hang in there and finish up this degree even when knowing I might not use it.

Remember that when you go out looking for a job, having that degree is always important, and employers usually don't pay much attention to what your major was, they just want to know that you accomplished something. Even if you plan on continuing your education after graduating in visual arts, whatever your career may be after that will definitely benefit from you having that accounting degree. If you plan on starting your own business you will be able to do your own books and not have to depend on anyone else and SAVE MONEY! Plus having the degree is always a good backup just in case the visual arts thing is slow or doesn't work out.

Best of luck to you!

Im taking accounting too. I took it bcause of the money and because i didnt know what i wanted to do in life. I thought i would learn to love it as time went by, its been 5years and i still think i should have taken sumthing else. If you dont like what ur doing, u should change, it doesnt matter how long it takes.

I say go back and major in what you love. It might be tough but it will be worth it in the end. Don't live the rest of your life doing someing you don't enjoy.Though, considering my opinon would be a tad-bit hard because I'll be entering college in a month. Soooo I haven't really experienced that sort of problem.
Hope I helped :)

Yes, I went back and did that -- twice. I think it's beneficial for two reasons: one is that you're closer to what you really like, and the other is that the combined skill set you end up with often works to your advantage. You may find that your accounting background STILL helps you in the visual arts.

Hang in there!

My brother in law's grandmother went back to school. First she raised a family and then she got her GED. She graduated college 7 years age and is very happy.
