Splenda IS sucrose with a fluoride (F) tacked on; the body doesn't recognize the molecule and it passes thru your GI tract without being digested. But first you get to taste it.:)
Sorbitol is used a lot and is fine but can cause diarrhea.
Sweetenes known to cause cancer in rats (who received many hundreds of times a normal dose) is aspartame. Returned to market after it was shown that the rats got unbelieveably high amounts of sunstance.

Splenda is a good substitute for regular sugar if you are diabetic or on a restricted diet. I believe that it is made from real (beet and cane) sugar but I'm not positive. Like I said, it is a good substitute if you have dietary restrictions, but it is relatively expensive and you need to use a large quantity of it when baking to get satisfactory results. If you have not used it before, you will find that it is a crystalline product that looks like very finely ground glass. As for the flavor, I think that there's very little difference. My cooks used it to make desserts for the residents of the assisted living facility I used to manage. The rumor is that it will cause stomach cancer but research does not support the rumors. Hope this helps.

Splenda : It's made from sugar so it tastes like sugar! Yeah, great slogan, I don't know how much truth there is to that, but it sounds good, anyway...
There is also this herbal sweetener, I can't remember the name of it, but it is really good and tastes way better than any artificial crap. Stevia! That's what it's called...sorry, took me a minute...it's excellent stuff, especially for diabetics and people on diets, because it is totally low-carb.
Aspartame is very very bad for you. It will give you seizures and brain tumors. Very, very nasty stuff. Also, I heard (granted this is hearsay) that it doesn't actually taste sweet, so much as the chemicals make your brain think it tastes sweet. Scary.

There is a correlation between high levels of aspartame (the sweetener in most diet sodas and other diet products) and cancer.
Splenda is sucralose, it's not bad for you.
