"PROHIBITED for both residents and non-residents (FINES of between USD 25.- and USD 50.-
will be imposed on the passenger in case of non-compliance):
1. fresh, dried or canned meat or meat products, poultry meat, narcotics, marijuana, dangerous drugs,
absinthe (and any other liquor/liquers containing artemisia absinthium), etc., plants (see note 56 below),
seeds (see note 57 below), vegetables, fruits, soil, live insects, snails and other living plant or animal
pests."

"U.S. Customs codes state "The importation of Absinthe and any other liquors or liqueurs that contain an excess of artemisia absinthium is prohibited."
In real world practice it is illegal to import any liquor that contains a detectable concentration of artemisia absinthium.
U.S. Customs can seize anything labeled as absinthe. If they do or don't, that depends on the knowledge and discretion of the agent.
If absinthe does not contain artemisia absinthium, and there are several brands available, the product is fully legal in the US. Most companies that sell non artemisia absinthium absinthe guarantee no U.S. customs problems."

If you don't mind being sketchy about it, I know a kid that used a scope bottle to get some back... and he said it was well worth it.

It's not prohibited by TSA, but by Federal law enforced by Customs. If you declare it on your Customs declaration, it generally will only be confiscated.
If you are caught trying to smuggle it in, you could be arrested and prosecuted. That could involve heavy fines and substantial prison time.
Absinthe is illegal for a reason -- it's poisonous. More than a couple of shots at a time can kill you and if you're allergic to Oil of Wormwood even a taste can trigger anaphylactic shock.

There's a loophole in the law. You can legally posess and consume it, but you can't sell or distribute it.
I've ordered it several times, and it has never been confiscated.
I even had it shipped to a military installation while I was in the Army (FT. Hood, TX) with little problem.

He paid $70 per bottle

Ewwww. From what I've read, I don't know why anyone would want to drink that vile stuff. There is a reason why they used to take it with sugar!
