Because having Nukes is a sign of POWER. It means that you are a Country to be reckoned with.

The idea behind possessing nuke weapons is based on M.A.D theory (M.A.D stands for "Mutually assured destruction."). The idea is that if both parties possess nukes, they maintain their sovereignty because both parties could absolutely obliterate each other which is in NEITHER of their best interests. MAD theory has been the basic justification for nuclear proliferaiton and deterrence.
North Korea wants nukes because that is a saber it can always rattle if it's neighbors or people it doesn't like start putting too much pressure on it.

It gives them an extra bargaining chip. Albeit, it seems impossibly dangerous for more and more countries to have them, they can use the fact they have the ability to gain concessions elsewhere in aid, food, whatever.

Ever heard of the Korean war maybe they are just making sure it doesn't happen again and if they happen to disagree with the USA government it probably will.
