I worked full time and nursed each of my babies for more than a year.
I had a Medela Pump'n'Style, which is the standard for women who will be using a pump on a regular basis for long periods of time. It's not cheap, but it gets the job done.
For home use, I had an Avent Isis, which I loved. And I've heard that there's now an electric double Isis pump, which MIGHT work as well as the Medela. (I bet it's more comfortable, but I'm not sure it's as durable.)
Stay away from anything "syringe style." You want a trigger style hand pump, if you're looking for a hand pump. And an electric is best of all if you're going to use it a lot.

I tried the manual pumps and found them to be a pain, and very ineffective. I time around I got an electric pump it is a Medela single Deluxe Battery/Eletric breast pump. It works with batteries when you are on the go or with a AC adaptor. I used it right after my milk came in when I was very engorged and my son didn't want to eat, it worked great. It is for occasional use and is perfect for someone who is going to nurse exclusive and will only need to pump when going out or engorgement. I would suggest getting extra bottle and stuff to go with it because most places sell it just the pump and a storage bottle no other equipment.
If pumping is something she will be doing often like if she is going back to work and will be pumping milk for the baby I would suggest the Medela Pump in Style it is a higher quality and made for everyday use.

Love, love, love the Avent Isis Manual Hand Pump!!! It was the best thing for me. The electric pumps work great for those who do not have a great milk supply. If your milk comes in and is in abundance than a hand pump is the way to go. When I initially started to nurse I had 2 different electric ones. Evenflo and Medela. Both would start to clog up and you'd have to wait for it to dry - in the meantime your breasts are getting more engorged. I tried the Isis and wondered why I had waited so long. It was small and portable - not big and bulky!!!
My recommendation would be to have both on hand. If your friend has a moderate amount of milk supply the electric ones will work but no matter what flow you have the hand held Isis by Avent will work wonders!!!!!
Hope this helped.

I loved the Medela pump in style. This allowed me to do both breasts at the same time and I would be done in less than 15 minutes. I was provide my child with breastmilk for a full year, even though I went back to work after 12 weeks.
Good luck.

I had avent manual pump and it sucked. I would be pumping for 40 minutes to get 4 oz. So I got medela pump in style {on ebay for 75 dollar in perfect condition!!!} and I love it! I can pump two 4 oz bottles in not even 10 minutes, I love the fact it is dual.

I finally ended up getting a evenflo electric pump after trying 2 manual pumps. And with my next one I'm going to get the double breast pump (it has 2 suction cups instead of one). In my experience the manual pumps stink, regardless of the brand u choose get an electric one. Good Luck

each mother and child are so different.
my son breastfed for 13 months and never took a bottle. he went straight to the cup at 4 mos. there was no need to pump and i hand expressed milk for his cereal when he was 6 mos.
my daughter breastfed till she was 7 1/2 mos. i tried an electric pump, but felt like a cow. i switched to the hand pump with great success. my daughter took her first bottle at 2 mos and never had problems with nipple confusion.

The Avent Isis pump was great! I would highly recomend that one for your friend. I used it to pump for my preemie until she was able to nurse and then to pump so that she could have milk from a bottle......hope this helps~
