I have a friend that puts a child's water-wing on her tiny Yorkie before she allows it near the pool. That little Yorkie is a wonderful swimmer, and loves to jump in, but never without her water-wing..

Since labs are for retrieving, their coats were made for swimming. They are practically waterproof! Dogs learn how to swim instantly and naturally. If you put them in water where they can't reach the bottom in they will instinctively kick and it teaches them to swim right on the spot. They are very smart and right away learn how to stay up and move. However it is a good idea to, get them used to water in the bathtub first so they don't freak out and become afraid of it.

How do you teach a dog to swim?
We don't have to teach the dog how to swim. Dogs, like all animals, have the natural ability to swim. What we must teach the dog is confidence in their ability to swim and to feel comfortable in the water.

Stick a dog over water and they will automatically move their legs in a swimming motion. It is just natural to them

They can swim just like humans do sometimes, it's called doggy paddling. There are also certain breeds that have webbed feet, so they can get around especially good in the water.

Mice can swim! Little dogs do the dog paddle same as biggun's! Just have a harder time with waves and distance.
