Does Multiple Sclerosis cause tissue death?

I'm not sure that these answers actually answered your question. If you consider an autoimmune response against myelin to be "tissue death," then yes, they did, since MS is a demyelinating disease. However, beyond the demyelinating aspect of MS, it does not cause any other tissue necrosis.

MS is caused by destruction of certain nerve tissues. MS is caused by plaque deposits that replace the tissues that insulate the nerve fibers. The healthy tissues are destroyed by the immune system, and replaced with plaque. The problem isn't the death of tissues as much as it is replacement of normal tissue with another type of tissue.

The insulating tissue on the nerves is a complex of fat and protein called myelin. Certain types of white blood cells attack the myelin, and replace it with plaque. Plaques are formed of hardened, fiberous tissues that cause the nerves to short circuit.

The term 'sclerosis' is the growth of fiberous tissues - like scar tissue, and multiple sclerosis means there are multiple locations where these fiberous tissues invade the myelin.

The answers already given about the demyelination process are excellent. I just wanted to add one tidbit about the FDA approved drug therapies currently available for MS. These particular medications are injectables and if you are injecting into the same spot over and over you could potentially cause tissue damage. (I don't know if it's considered tissue death, however.)
I have a friend who stubbornly refused to rotate her injection spot for several years and has permanent tissue loss in her upper thigh.

Good answers so far. But have you ever heard of LDN? It is a great medication that unlike Interferons or Copaxone stops the MS progression in its tracks. And instead of a weekly shot it is administered in a daily capsule. Endorphins play a very important part in regulating the immune-system and it is proven, that people with MS have not enough endorphins and LDN tricks the body into producing more endorphins. It is that simple! It works for thousands in the US and worldwide.

Also, go to this web-site and sign the LDN trial petition! We have already over 8,000 signatures but need 20,000 by the end of March! Let's do magic!

Until there is a cure, there is LDN!
