I have a 4-5 lb Maltese who's almost 5 months old, and I was eating a small packet of those Famous Amos miniature-cookies (it has small milk-chocolate chips in it), and, like a complete IDIOT, I left about 3/4 of a mini-cookie on the coffee table while I ran to the kitchen for a napkin. I came back to find the cookie on the floor, and my pup trying to eat it. Who knows, she could have eaten some of it! I live in a small town & all the vet offices are closed. Is she doomed?? PLEASE help!

i doubt anything will happen to her. she is small, but it was 3/4 of a mini cookie....with chips in it....think about how much chocolate she could have really eaten even if she DID eat it. im guessing that the worst that will happen is she gets kind of sick and throws up once or twice and doesnt want to eat her food for a day. but thats the worst.

my dog once ate an entire chocolate cake and lived to be 15. (his death was not related to the chocolate in anyway). so i think youre fine.

A five pound dog can withstand about 1/2 an ounce of chocolate a month with no reprocusions. Yes chocolate is bad for a dog and they shouldn't eat it. But unless it was a large quantitiy (not just a few chips from a cookie) nothing serious is bound to happen. If anything your Maltese will probably end up with just a stomach ache.

We have a 16 pund lhasa apso who ate about 8 ounces of chocolate a few years ago. I was sure it was THE END, so I waited for the first signs of fatal food poisoning, poised to make an emergency run to the vet. As it turned out, the doggie threw up twice - not excessively - moped around for half a day, and that was the end of it.

I can't speak for your little pup, but one cookie or a fraction thereof will probably not harm her much. If she starts getting really ill, see if you can find a 24 hour vet, but don't panic yet. Chocolate and dogs don't mix, but their tummies are tougher than you think, and one cookie shouldn't be fatal. Good luck.

She didn't eat a lot, if anything at all, so she should be fine. A dog, even a small puppy would have to eat a large amount of chocolate to get sick. Just monitor her for the next day and make sure she's acting normally. However, I don't think there's anything to worry about.

I honestly doubt it will hurt her. My Mom used to feed our Shih-tzu whole mini sized Snickers bars (even though I begged, threatened & did my best to enlighten her!) The dog loved them and was never the slightest bit poisoned, just a little bit chunky. So, I doubt the little tiny bit of chocolate in 3/4 of a mini sized cookie, with those little bitty chips will hurt her. I bet she liked it though!

Yes chocolate is bad for dogs. Remember that with milk chocolate the dog needs to eat 1 oz for 1 pound of body weight for it to be lethal. So i highly doubt that he ate 4 oz of chocolate in that cookie. Relax, just take him to the vet if you see anything different. http://www.talktothevet.com/ARTICLES/DOGS/chocolatetoxic.HTM

she is not doomed. chocolate is harmful only if it is in large quanities or it's dark chocolate. if small amounts of chocolate killed dogs, there would be dead dogs clogging the streets. just be careful that it does not happen on a large scale, like leaving a big bowl of chocolate halloween candy where the dog can get it

The dog is fine.. Dark chocolate is the big problem... A few chocolate chips isn't going to kill her. Be more careful in the future.

a very small amount will not hurt her. even though chocolate is bad for dogs. the amount she ate was probably not enough to hurt her. just keep your eye on her for tonight. and then have your vet check her in the morning.
