I read how some people can do 5, 6, 7 thousand pushups consecutively. I can do maybe 70 and I'm pooped. I'd be enthralled to do even 200. Can just doing lots of pushups throughout the day lead to being able to do hundreds of pushups in a row?

Well, this guy did 1700 in one hour...with the backs of his hands!

So, yeah...it is possible to do thousands of pushups.

And yes, you could work your way up by training vigorously...several sets of 50/day...and increase each week.
