He could not read. Most people could read at that time. Most of the Bible was not written until 100 years after his death. ~

matty: Jesus read from the Torah in the synagogue on the Sabbath, debated with the Jewish Pharisees, discussed Law with the Scribes and Sadducees. Was admired by Rabbis such a Nicodemus. There is no clear-cut evidence to indicate that he never attended any school nor any that He did, either. Being God in the flesh and the Logos or Spokes person or being, Who gave the commands to Create the Cosmos, earth etc., I would conclude that He was EDUCATION personified.

He grew up in Galilee, in a suburb of one of the largest Greek cities in Syria. He spent most of his adult life in the Decapolis, a stretch of major Greek communities on the east shore of the Sea of Galilee and the Jordan River. It almost certain that he could read, write and speak Greek fluently. Jewish communities at that time also maintained public schools. From the Scriptures, we see that Jesus had no trouble reading the lectionary from the Greek Septuagint version of Isaiah.
People tend to confuse the ancient world with Medieval Europe. In Greco-Roman society, even foreign slaves were taught to read and write. Literacy in Greek communities was widespread. In the Roman Empire, even a simple job like book-keeper, accountant, or clerk required familiarity with the lecture notes of Aristotle, at a bare minimum. If Jesus was illiterate, it would have been very unusual.
And there is a common misconception that Galilee was a series of rural communities populated by simple "country folk." The truth is just the opposite. Galilleans were Hellenized Jews in close contact with Greek civilization, and were regarded with suspicion by the less educated, more rural Judaeans in the south.

This is just for "Brendan": I am not a Christian, but if you are going to rebut them, at least know what you are talking about. Jesus' family were stonemasons-upper middle class, to you. That usually also meant architect. So Jesus was born into a nice family-not poor. The fairy tale is that he was poor.
As others have answered, Jesus was also a Rabbi. He would have to have been literate to read and interpret the Torah. He would have been learning this at a very young age, especially because of the family trade. He would need to read to be a stonemason as well.
Thank you...

Yes. When He was around 12 yrs old He was trying to correct the misconceptions and errors of the leaders in the temple where the teaching went on. I'm not sure where to find the story in the Bible, probably Matthew or Luke about when Jesus was growing up. They were returning from Jerusalem. His mom thought he was with dad and his dad thought he was with his mom and they realized that Jesus was left behind at Jerusalem. When they found him he was in the temple teaching the Rabbis and Priests.
He is the Word of God according to the book of Revelations.

Luke 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

Hello and of course Jesus knew how to read! When Jesus went into the temple he read in the hearing of all present Isaiah 61 to them (cross reference Luke 4:18-19) and told them it was fulfilled in their hearing. Jesus in His younger years would have to have been instructed in Judaism, having learned and memorized sections of scriptures. He didn't go to school as it in our culture and society, yet he was definitely instructed in the Pentateuch (the first five books of the old testament). He I am sure read in the language of the day, which was koine greek I do believe. How's that?

The bible says there was a woman and she was about to be stoned. Jesus stepped between the angry mob and the woman. He bent down and began writting in the sand.“He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her,” that the woman fell to her knees in desperation. Again, He likely crouched before the temple and continued His writing in the sand. While Christ wrote, stones fell from dirty hands and people slowly departed. Eventually, Jesus was left alone with the adulteress on the temple steps. If thinking if He could write, He could read

In Jesus day, the only people who could read were the priesthood.
Jesus got his education in the temple, and yes--he could read. The bible even gives an account, at least once, of a time when he read publically in the temple.

Jesus did know how to read. We have record of His reading from the Scriptures in various synagogues. Many students were homeschooled in that day. Others learned from the temple or synagogue elders, even things like reading and writing.

He was trained in the Temple and you are required to read the Hebrew scrolls.
He certainly spoke Hebrew, Greek, more than like a dialetec of ARamatic and possibly Latin.
He was also an artisan. Someone who could make furniture with no nails.
