it could just be me but i hate it. it bugs the hell out of me, and all the mexican women i know do it (i am half white half mexican). i have all ready warned many of then that when my daughter is born they best respect my wishes and not insult my child.
idont know could just be me but i think its rude, and yea when they are babies they wont know what your saying but as they grow then will begin to understand and i would not want my daughter knowing people calling her ugly, or cow, or what ever.
do all mexican women do this?
am i wrong to be offend for the little ones?
sofar i have no kids, but i have thought about it a lot and i have no idea why. i think its kind o odd for a 20 yearold guy to think about these things.

It is meant as a term of endearment. Don't worry about it.

My boyfriends mom is 1/2 Mexican, and she was the same way to my son. Oddly, she was NOT that way to her daughter's daughter. The little girl (born 2 months before my son) was 'so beautiful' and she cried, and they made over her like no one had ever seen a newborn before.
When my son was born the first thing I heard out of her was 'look at that big Charlie Brown head'. And my son had an average size head, according to the growth charts and everything, and he looked perfectly proportional.
She makes fun of him for looking bald (he's blonde, unlike their family who all have dark hair), for crying (he's a baby!), and they made rude comments about (and I'm trying to put this delicately) his genitals.
They're really the only family of Mexican descent that I know (I live in a small, pretty much non-integrated, redneck town), but they uphold that 'stereotype' very well.

I would think it would be a term of endearment, I have told both my children what they liked like at birth. My oldest looked like a purple alien, and the baby looked like a little monkey. They both are so tickled and get the giggles at this and ask to hear it often. Don't be too sensitive about this, you want your children to be able to laugh at things people say and not cry over them. It will help with their self-esteem in the future.Teaching them to find the to find humor is life is a wonderful gift. It is easy to take the power from a rude word if you can find humor in it. You can't always change people but you can change what it means to you and whether or not you allow it too hurt you or your children. Good luck I know having children is hard and unforunatly life is not just back and white there are many more shades of gray,

You mean call them ugly as if its something cute to say? I'm Mexican and I've noticed that as well. I think a lot of Mexican women do this...and you have every right to get offended! I would and I would definitely say something if your baby got calle ugly.

I don't know if this is true for Mexicans, but lots of cultures have taboos against complimenting a baby for fear of attracting bad luck or the evil eye.
I've seen woman passing each other on the street:
"Ugly baby!"
"Yours, too!"
and neither of them is offended. I think it's code. They're really saying, "Beautiful baby!" but they can't say that.

Words mean different things in different cultures. If they are smiling at your baby and say that it is good thing not an insult.
