The speech topic has to be on a Cultural Symbol, or Ritural. I need it to have enough information for a 5-7 min speech.

Do some research on the cross. Most people believe that it is a Christian symbol, but, the truth is that until the early 300s, it was known as a pagan symbol- and one that would be rejected by the early Christians.

Emperor Constantine claimed that he saw the image of a cross and heard a voice say "with this symbol, go forth and conquer" (or something to that effect) So, he had a cross put on all of his soldiers and, his army was victorious. It was after this, that Constantine insisted that the cross be accepted as a symbol of Christianity. They even altered bible translations so that when it spoke of the instrument that Jesus died on (which was the ancient Greek word Stauros- which means an upright beam) they translated it as "cross" and thus, history was re-written and a new symbol was born. - it is some interesting history!

Hmm cultural symbols could include a giant football or soccer ball, or any flag/banner or brand logo that is well known, (like the nike, or the polo player, etc.)

Rituals could include baptisms, weddings, bar mitzvahs, first communions, commitment ceremonies,

Any of these should lend themselves to your necessary length speech. Good luck!
