I got a new job and my co-workers like to go out on happy hour. The problem is they order all these fancy drinks that I never even heard of. Any tips on some drinks I can order (I don't know many drinks other than beer)? Any that makes me look somewhat knowledgable...I'm the youngest and most inexperienced of the crowd...

If you are new at the job and younger than most, you probably need to be accepted, but keep your wits about you.

You want a low alcohol drink, such as Amstel Light or Sam Adams Light beer. Or get a tall wine spritzer with lime. If you get a mixed cocktail, get it "tall", (more mixer, no extra booze)

I had a buddy that ordered "red beer", just tap beer with tomato juice. The after work 'food value' helped him keep his wits.

Or intersperse your drinks with bottled ice water, telling your buddies that you are just really thirsty.

Leave early, its hard to make a good impression for a long time in strange surroundings. At least until you know the lay of the land.

After you figure things and people out and are out of the probationary period, you can let your hair down.

If something funny happens at work, these guys will be saying that you are a straight arrow kinda guy, kind of Conservative etc. that's what you need if anything odd happens. not drinking buddies.

Watermelon has a bunch of good drinks. But don't be embarrassed because you are the youngest, everyone that goes with you to happy hour was in the same position you are at some point in time. If you want to impress, pay for a round of drinks for everyone, tip the bartender appropriately, and watch how grateful, impressed everyone should seem by your generosity. Ohh, stay away from the girly fruity drinks though.

Well, since you are new on the job, I would suggest that you just enjoy the ambiance and order a Coke or a Pepsi. When you get to know your co-workers better then you can indulge. But, until then be more of a spectator and leave the wine cocktails and the whiskey sours to those who may be on their way out the door.

Well, without knowing what kinds of drinks they are ordering, or even what you like to drink, I'd tell you to stick to the classics.

Try a Manhattan, you can order it "perfect" if you want it dry, a sweet if you want it well sweet.

Bloody Marys are always nice.

Hard to go wrong with just about any kind of Martini, maybe try a Dirty Martini if you like olives.

Or just stick with a Beer, nothing wrong with that.

i like to look at the bar menu and see what specials the bartender is pouring. Was out with co-workers the othe night and they had a mojito and lemon drop on the menu. My friend and I both had those. Very tasty.

Or I have wine. Wine is usually cheaper. Depends on if I am driving home or not really.

I like to ask the bartender if they have any new drinks they are trying out and depending on what it is I may order that. or ask them what their favorites are.

Go to the library and get a bar tending book. Look through it and see what kinds of mixed drinks you like (sweet, sour, harsh etc.) then if you order something and the bar tender does not know what is in it you can tell him and they will make it. Looks good infront of people too that you know what is in a drink.

With the price of mixed drinks these days you can't afford to be impressing your co-workers. Just order your favorite beer and be done with it and let them think what ever.

I say you can order a beer. Why not? If that's what you like, then go for it. If you really want to order something else, maybe a seven and seven, jack and coke, long island iced tea, or just ask if the bartender has a specialty.

Ask them why they order what they order, why they like it. Maybe they are showing off to one another. They may rag you for a minute, but they will probably be more exited that you want to "hang with the big dogs". Don't get hammered to impress them and don't drink something you don't like.

a popular favorite these days is the Mojito (Moe-Hee-Toe) it's is rum, simple syrup and mint thinned out with soda water. Not my favorite, but it is good. It is sure to catch your older co-workers off gaurd.
