I'm not sure if you can base what someone wants over a reaction to a card.
However, just ask him on a date anyways. Just ask him if he wants to go catch a movie one night. What is it going to hurt besides your ego?

Unless he is taken give it a shot. Saying something is sweet doesn't necessarily imply anything.

Just ask him out. He'll either say no, or you will learn to deal with rejection.Either way you will know and you will feel better for it .
