There are pills to control it...why are you NOT medicating your dog or why has the vet not suggested it???? Epilepsy is NOT a big deal...as it is very TREATABLE. I suggest you do some research before you decide anything as you obviously know nothing if you did not even know it could be treated! Blood??? What are you talking about, when a dog has a seizure the is no blood..are you sure your dog is epileptic or are you talking about some other illness. Maybe you need a new vet that knows what they are talking about. Ask your vet about putting your dog on phenobarbital tablets.

What on earth is your sister talking about? There is no bleeding associated with epilepsy, and dogs (and people) can live a long and perfectly healthy life with it.
He should be on medication to reduce the attacks, talk to the vet about this. He won't be miserable, he won't be in pain, he will be a normal healthy dog who may sometimes have a seizure. If he does, it will only last a minute or two, and he will feel confused when it is over. Give him a few minutes to recover, and he will be his usual self again.
I had a cocker spaniel with epilepsy, he lived to a fine old age. He did have occasional seizures, but it was no big deal.

While epilepsy in dogs can't be cured, it can usually be treated with pills everyday and the dog will no longer have the epileptic seizures. I suggest you talk to your vet about treating your dogs epilepsy instead of putting him down.

Some breeds of dogs do develop this disease & while it can't be cured (just like in humans ) it can be managed successfully with medication; the same drugs they use for people. Only you can decide if that's the avenue you want to take. Did you discuss this option with you Vet? The dog is relatively young so it might be possible to control this disease & afford your pet some quality of life. Also ,you might want to consider the finanacial obligations this might entail...please, check out these options carefully before you make a hasty decision.

Epilepsy is a neurological condition. Dogs do not bleed when having seizures. The medication to contol seizures is dilantin. When taking the meds, the dog will act normal in most cases, but may have infrequent seizures. It is inhumane to NOT treat the disease, so if you don't have the money, putting the dog to sleep is a valid point.

Well, my dog has epilepsy too and his is decently mild as far as frequency is concerned but when it does happens, it's fairly severe. You know, I don't know who your vet is but there are a lot of treatment options to help with epileptic attacks in dogs. I'd get a second opinion before you decide to put your pet down. Even severe epilepsy can be controled. No, it'll never be cured but it can be controled to the point your dog doesn't have the attacks as often and they're not as out of control. A few things to consider is a lot of things can set-off epilepsy such as loud noises, certain types of lights (not just flashing) and even some types of security alarms. Like I said, get another vet's opinion before you put your doggy down. A few tips to help you out when he does have his epileptic attacks: Try to keep him calm, don't let him run in to furniture, etc. If you can, try to move things out of his way while he's having the attack so he can't hurt himself, turn off lights and sounds such as the TV, radio, etc. and above all, DO NOT try to put your fingers in his mouth, it is impossible for them to choke on their tongue. Good luck.

Oh and... I noticed a lot of people are wondering about the blood.... I am assuming but I think she means he runs in to things and hurts himself to the point he bleeds. When my dog first had a seizure, he ran in to several pieces of large furniture and got a few nasty bruises on him. If they're not helping him to calm down and stay in one place, it's very likely, not to mention easy, for him to get seriously injured.

Why is your dog not on an antiseizure medication? That is what should have been done at the beginning. If antiseizure meds do not work then it probably would be best for the dog to put him down. Consult your vet

Your vet should be able to treat your dog with medication. You might have to give it every day but it would be worth it .Call your local vet and just talk to him and see what he thinks.Once he is medicated he might not ever have another one .Good Luck!!
