or in any other American war that draft was successful, in what ways was it successful? (like the women had a chance to work where men usually worked, then when the men returned there was a larger workforce, which meant a larger economy, making prices go down.) any other ways that it benefitted us as a whole?

in contrast, how was it not successful or harmful instead. like in the vietnam war (other wars too) how was the draft not successful?

The draft was successful for America in the wars it fought because there was no shortage of manpower. It was the reason that no war was fought in the heartland of America because it prevented being invaded by fighting the wars in Europe and the Pacific Islands.

First of all, we were at war and we needed every man and/or woman we could get, to fight to free France and stop the invasion of Italy and England.

What makes a military draft successful is that it doesn't discriminate. No matter how rich or poor you are, your number is in the draw and if they pull that number, you are drafted. The only way you could avoid the draft is do like our President did and go to College, be disabled, or for religious reasons.

If we re-started the draf again, you might see a lot of Congressmen and Women vote to get our troops out of Iraq. That would mean that their lovely little darlings could be drafted too and if they kept them out by pulling strings, the whole world would know about it.

During war time, if troops are needed to fight and there are not enough volunteers, the drat is the best way to fill the ranks with educated and qualified soldiers.

The draft also gave some ppl the opportunity to have a career in the military and training whereas they wouldn't have been accepted in the military if it wasn't war-time.

IE, my grandfather couldn't join the military because he was deaf in one ear... BUT they let him in during the war and he learnded a skill that he used the rest of his life.

Today, the military doens't accept high school dropouts, criminals with drug offenses and some other minor things... The military should be allowed for these ppl in order to have a second chance to obtain a career.

The draft might could help those much like it did in WW2.

It was successful. Proof: we won. It failed. Proof: look at all those who ran away rather than serve.
The larger work force made prices go up, not down. Just look at the cost of living compared with the work force. In many ways, lower wages are driven by what the employer can get away with. Higher wages are driven by skill and productivity...sometimes.
When it became expected to have two incomes in a family for the purpose of supporting a family, it became impossible or nearly impossible for a man or woman to support a family on a single low or near minimum wage income. Wages dropped by half compared to the cost of living just because people were not starving on two incomes.

Draft in the Veitnam war was an option to enlisting. Two year drafts and three year enlistments. Some choice of duty if you enlisted but many still served in Veitnam
