I have a nephew that is 5 years old and he hardly says mom. That is all he says. I think he tries to speak other words but none of them are understandable. Is this normal? Because we already took him to the hospital so they can do some analysis, and they said that everything was normal.

I knew of a child that was sick (colds/flu) 3years old, his eustation tubes were plugged. So his typanic membranes (ear drums) were not vibrating to send messages to the brain about what the child was hearing. Have your nephew's ears checked out! Right away. He is several years behind other children his age in the vocabulary department. This will affect his ability in school. Get the operatiion to install tubes in his membranes to let his ears drain. Make sure he receives the most medical attention he can get.

I think he has a speech problem. I would seriously take him to see a speech therapist because he really should be speaking by now. He should have really been speaking at least 20 words when he was around 18 months... it's a developmental stage... if he missed it he will have a hard time catching up. However, with proper therapy, maybe he'll be okay. The hospital probably looked at his brain activity, and yes, everything was okay because he can register things, but he's not speaking about what he sees...

Has he ever been tested for autism? A five year old should be talking by now...take him to the doctor and insist on more testing with a developmental specialist. Early detection is the key with developmental delays. Good luck and don't worry everything will be fine.
