A car in Manhattan is very expensive and unnecessary. I would recommend that you sell it and save yourself car payments, insurance, gas, parking, etc. costs, plus the general pain in the butt-ness of driving in Manhattan. Subways are way cheaper, and for the times that you need a car, it's cheaper (and more convenient -- truly door to door service) to get a cab than to own a car that whole time.

A lot of places are accessible by train if you're going outside the city, and if you're going farther than that, the cost savings of ditching your car more than cover occasional car rentals. I rent one maybe once a year for a weekend trip but have otherwise never wished I had a car in the City.

People in other parts of the country find this hard to believe, but, you do not need a car in New York. Finding parking in most places if very difficult; it's not unusual to spend an hour riding around looking for a spot, the garages are expensive - $30 to park your car - the bus is $2, and, some people pay as much or more to park their cars near home as people in other parts of the country pay for rent. The public transportation in New York is great - most lines on trains and buses run all night long, every day. You are hardly ever more than ten blocks from a subway or five blocks from a bus. The $2 fare allows you to take a bus to a train or take a bus when you get off the train. You don't need a car here - figure out the cost of parking, insurance (it's mandatory), and taxes, it's probably cheaper to take taxis, if that's what you prefer.
Visit New York - without your car - and, you decide if you will really need it.

Nope. A garage in Manhattan is $400+/month and car insurnace will run you $600/month. You will end up using the car MAYBE 2 times a month. So sell it, leave it at home or push it off a cliff. You do not need it here. Everything you need will be closer to your apartment then when you live in the burbs have to walk from your parking spot to the mall enterance

Do not bring your car. It is not necessary. Find an apartment that is reasonable to work and rely on the subway to get you around. Otherwise plan on spending at least $200/mo for parking not to mention all the other expenses of a car. Use the money you save on a car and apply it to the rent of an apartment.

I absolutely have lived in quite some diverse places in brooklyn and queens. It relies upon the position you stay. I lived in jamaica and had a driveway and that became superb having my vehicle. when I lived in williamsburg I parked it on the line and had to pass it two times per week. yet there became continually an section on the different area. It became really ordinary. no longer some thing undesirable ever got here about. notwithstanding, when I lived in Astoria I had to pass it two times per week and infrequently would spend as a lot as an hour utilizing round searching for an section, and then would from time to time be blocks and blocks remote from residing house. obviously in case you deal with to pay for to save it in a lot it really is nicely acceptable. I nevertheless stay interior the city and characteristic no vehicle anymore. I calculated the cost and characteristic determined that its absolutely more affordable to employ vehicles then to pay for a storage or lot. The trains and buses get me everywhere i go with to pass besides.
