The policy officer who wrote the accident report should have recorded the insurance information of the other party.

Contact the police office (the name should be listed on the report.) If he/she doesn't have any info, you should ask your agent about turning in the claim under your uninsured motorist coverage (if you have it -- many, but not all, states require it.) If the adjustor is then able to figure out the other party's insurance coverage, they may be able to go after them (it's called subrogation.)

Even if you have uninsured motorist coverage, you typically have to come up with a deductible (these vary by state, but are typically $200-300.) However, if your insurance company then subrogates and collects, they would pay you back your deductible.

As long as the other party was ticketed and you are not considered at fault (in in a contributory manner), an uninsured motorist claim doesn't count against you.

** Edited to add:
Since you know the policy number, that will make it easier to find the company. If you want to email me the details, I might be able to help you. (Your own agency should really be able to do this for you; if they aren't, you need to consider switching agents!)

Been there, done that, made the cops come to the scene!

1. Change from State Farm, they suck, always have
2. If the police took info at the scene there will be a report, you can ask the police for a copy of that report. If you took the info yourself and didn't write down all the appropriate information, you've learned an expensive lesson. If you didn't take down personal information about the other driver from their licence and proof of insurance, you have no proof they were in the accident accept your word. If they have already had their car fixed, it's gonna be harder to prove.
3. Here, the police suck too, they won't come to an accident scene unless someone is injured. For the $25 million we pay per year to have them they should be kissing your feet at every fender bender.

I feel sorry for you, and I hope you can take the advice the other person gave and make use of it, but you might end up having the claim against your insurance rather then the other person at fault ... which means you pay the deductible and your rate goes up.

That's ridiculous. You don't need to do anything except report the accident to State Farm and make sure they have a copy of the police report. They will do the work and make sure you're made whole, that's why you have insurance. Don't do their job for them. If your agent won't help, call the insurance commission for the state and complain. Bottom line, you can't get the information from the DMV data base, but your insurance company can.

I'm not sure what you mean by "company code," but the insurance company NAME would be listed on a police report.

Turn the information over to State Farm...for crying out loud they search this stuff every day.

1. State Farm does not suck

2. State Farm has the capability to do DMV checks on names and will come up with insurance company information for vehicles. Give them all the information you have and ask them to do that. If the adjuster tells you they can't, then ask for a supervisor.
