My brother is considering a career as a police officer. If you have been through a police academy or training and are now an officer, can you elaborate on what the typical police training is like, as far as breaking out the types of classes you took and physical and combat training you had. Our local department has a 6 month police training program. Thank you in advance.

I graduated from the academy in Colorado last May and this is basically how it looks:
M-W-F morning PT
Classes from 8am - 5pm and many 2-3 days a week of 6-10pm.
We took one week of specialized driver training, including high speed and obstacle (includes high speed backing going straight and round obstacles, quick decision making etc) (this was the most fun)
A week of firearms training, mostly handgun, but a little rifle and shotgun (departments tend to do this), during the day, and at night with distractions
Two weeks of arrest control including take downs, pressure point control and mace (very unpleasant because you have to experience it).
The rest is all classroom work - criminal law (state and federal), ethics, search and seizure, the constitution, traffic stops, traffic law, drugs and alcohol, officer safety, children's code, domestic violence etc
The academy I went through is 36 credit hours (or approximately 14 weeks). Obviously states vary on their requirements, but this is just an idea.
