I've found, in my 4 years of Tae Kwon Do, that my confidence has greatly improved and I've gained success in other areas of life. My school work has improved, my family life has improved, and my sense of responsibility has improved. So yes, I'd say that martial arts have a definite effect on how you feel and how you act.

I have to be honest, when I first started I thought the "build confidence" thing was a crock. I was in it to get some exercise. But it is weird...over time your way of looking at things changes and you feel more confidence but in a humble sort of way. It is hard to explain. But yes, I definitely feel different and people respond to me differently now. I also find that I give compliments more freely and am much less insecure. And I didn't think I was insecure before!

The short answer is: YES!

As for HOW it makes you feel, that depends on what type of martial art you study (internal v. external) and why you are studying it!
