like when you see guys like Matt Hughes or Noguiera shoot in they usually dont go to their knees, but then frank mir, shogun, and ninja go to their knees when they shoot. Is one better or what?

Its easier for hughes to pick someone up when he is not on his knee's. In a take down you want to go to your knee. It helps you change your level and get under their defense. You watch heavyweight wrestlers and they are sloppy and try to just reach in. Now if it is a double or single you should go to one, you might have thought one of them was shooting a traditional double or single but they were not. There is a lot of hybrid moves from wrestling into MMA. And some may look like something but really they are an adaptation to move quickly to something else. You will have to ask them at the time they were doing it to see what they where trying to be exact.

I think it depends on the way you were taught.

From what I've seen outside of televised MMA, people who generally have a wrestling background find it more important to drop to thier knees as it allows for more penetration to knock the person off balance. other grappling arts that don't tend to not.

of course that is not a hard and fast rule, but a rule of thumb that I've seen.

It all depends on if you are wanting to get a scoop or a take down. Scoop = slam take down =mount Train with wrestlers you can not ignore this in your MMA training

Depends on what you wanna do. Ideally You shouldn't goto your knees though.

Some people that goto their knees may be looking to scoot into mount. People that are on their feet are more likely to get a good slam.

Go to your knees if it helps achieve your goal, and complete your technique. The objective is to take them down.
